Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park

I’ve never seen a National Park (or any other place) quite like Great Sand Dunes National Park. It’s kind of out of the way (I decided to do nine-and-a-half hours of driving — which actually became eleven hours, with traffic — to make this happen). But it was a fun way to use a day off when the rest of my family was unavailable.

The scene definitely made me think of Star Wars and Dune and other desert films I’ve seen. But the thing that I think I’ll remember the most is the amount of effort that was required to get up those hills, with so much of my energy lost with each footstep in the soft sand. I was so glad I had my new trekking poles with me to help with providing more traction. Still, it was a sweaty day, even though the temperatures were only in the upper-60s and lower-70s (Fahrenheit).

I enjoyed my visit — but after one hike, I feel like I “got the idea.” I imagine that most of the rest of the park would feel pretty similar.
