Where the Love of Linguistics, Statistics, and Europe Meet

The chart above and the study from which it was produced are a sort of sweet spot of intrigue for me: the place where the love of linguistics, statistics, and the cultures of Europe meet. From my personal experiences in traveling and observing linguistic minutiae, it feels┬áright. But to be able to quantify it like this?!? Joy…

I find it very interesting that the three languages I’ve spent the most time with — English, Dutch, and French — are so closely connected with one another. And it’s also intriguing that three of the languages which have long felt so far away from me — Russian, Portuguese, and Hungarian — indeed are quite far away from my linguistic home.

It looks like the next logical language for me to learn would be German or Frisian. Or maybe Greek. But maybe I’ll just learn them all.
