Cousins Up-Close

I’d be lying if I said that I never had my doubts about moving back to Ohio, after almost ten years of living in Amsterdam. That being said, one thing that regularly reassures me and makes me feel glad about our move is our increased proximity to extended family — paving the way for opportunities such as the small reunion / Dad’s 60th Birthday Celebration we’re getting to experience this week with my parents, siblings, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

This weekend, already, our kids and their cousins have been able to catch crayfish (a.k.a. crawdads) in the river shallows near my parents’ house. They’ve played together on the swings and monkeybars. They’ve challenged each other on the basketball court and football field. They’ve cooled off in the sprinkler-slide in the backyard. They’ve gone out for ice cream at the legendary Paul’s Drive-In… And all of this has happened in the prelude to the actual celebration!

I’m grateful for the opportunity to spend time with these people I love. At this moment, it’s me and my Dad, my two boys, my brother, and my brother’s two boys — all sitting in the living room of my parents’ house, watching Team USA basketball in its prelude to the Olympics… And even though it’s a fairly low-key moment, it occurs to me that this is one of the greatest reasons to rejoice in the fact that we’re now living, together with the rest of our family, in the United States of America.
