Back from the Fjords of Norway

Eric and Marci with Alesund Overview

Marci and I just got back to Amsterdam following an invigorating cruise to and through the fjords of Norway.

Classic Fjord View

I could not possibly offer an adequate description of the beautiful places we saw– so I was eager to download and view all the pictures that we took during our travels… But even the pictures, as beautifully as they turned out, are an extremely poor substitute for the real thing. Regardless, I thought I’d post a few of my favorite images here. Also, for whomever might be interested, a broader collection of photos from our past week is available in the Family Pictures section of the website.

Suffice to say: it was a great week of vacation — both as a celebration of our 14th wedding anniversary and as a “last fling” in Europe.

Just as we were hoping, this trip was also significant because it allowed Marci and me to rest and reconnect. It made us feel more prepared for the coming season of transition in which rest and relaxed relational connection will likely be hard to come by. I came away from the trip with an increased sense of gratitude for the wonderful woman that God has given me as a “traveling companion” in life. On a couple of occasions, the two of us would be hiking along the edge of the fjord with breathtaking scenery all around us — and I couldn’t contain myself from gasping, “Wow! Un-be-lievably beautiful…” And then I’d grin and say to Marci, as an aside, “And that fjord is pretty impressive, too.”

Church in Geiranger

Our favorite place which we visited was the Geirangerfjord, with its pristine natural beauty. But we also enjoyed the cities that we got to see: Ålesund and Bergen. And the time on the cruise ship itself was wonderful in its own way.

It was an unforgettable trip, and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to all our friends in Amsterdam who worked together to provide care for our children while we were away. Not only were our kids fed and bathed and transported between home and school at the appropriate times — they were provided with special memories of their own throughout the course of the week! We’re already hearing great stories from our kids about sports and music and sunshine and picnics and special meals — but I’m sure that what we’ve heard is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. It sounds like the week was every bit as amazing for our kids as it was for us.

So consider this a special shout-out to Marjan, Jaldert, Simone, Colby, Naomi, Sunita, Linda, Patricia, Leslie, Kor, and Claire, who all worked together to make the whole week possible. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, dear friends! We love you more more than words could ever say.

When I think back over the past week, the beauty of it all will be permanently etched in my memory and treasured as long as I live…

Oh, and those fjords were pretty nice, too. 🙂
