Have you heard about this tradition? In Holland, is it traditional to congratulate the parents on the birthday for his or her child? And do they do this for all ages, or just the non-adult children?

Oh, yes. That's definitely a tradition here in the Netherlands. Parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents -- they all get to be congratulated, in the event of a birthday in the family. Adults just as much as children.

I've actually come to enjoy the practice. To me it makes sense, as if it's reliving the experience of a person's day of birth (when even in American culture, it's normal to say "Congratulations" to any close family members) and gaining a fresh appreciation for the fact that you get to celebrate yet another year of life with this person in your life.

I don't think it'll ever catch on in the USA -- but it's definitely something I appreciate about Dutch culture!
