And that raises a trickier question: is the American home now becoming more European thanks to IKEA? Your thoughts?
You raise an interesting question, Jay -- about the relative "Americanness" or "Dutchness" of the kitchen. I guess it's pretty safe to say that the kitchen itself (the cabinetry, the appliances, and the countertops) is quite Dutch -- since we got it second-hand from a very-Dutch couple in their 60s (who had picked out the kitchen -- from their presumably conservative Dutch tastes -- while in their 50s). Also, I think the fact that everything is built-in is very European, from what I've seen... and so is the way that it's so built-up (taking advantage of every possible square meter)...
BUT I'm sure we've also brought our Americanness into the project as well. Color choices, the addition of things like our "broom closet," and room layout (several of the architects, real estate agents, and contractors that worked on the project took quite a bit of convincing, when it came to removing our central hallway) probably show more of the American side of things.
So I guess you could say the end result is something of a blend -- just like we've become!
