I lived in Arnhem for two years: it has a sense of it's own history and people still connect strongly to the WWII events. There are still veterans that come stand by the base of the bridge to answer questions most days, and the walk around the memorials of the inner ring road is sobering, as you say. The book is a better experience than the movie.

The woodlands and fields around the city are wonderful: the Kroller-Muller park and art museum are worth visiting. I was surprised by the sand dunes dotting the landscape so far inland. Closer to town, the Sonsbeek park, especially the summer concerts and art shows, is really good.

The city center was rebuilt with little of the traditional character, unfortunately, but pastry at Dudok off the market square is fun and the restaurants along the Rijnkade are great in summer. The Watermoelen in Velp is a wonderful high-end restaurant, and the villages around the city have a lot of charm.

A cemetery like this... visually sobering, chilling yet heartwarming for all who gave their lives and the many who are known unto God.
