Clowns seem to be inherently creepy. From The Simpson's 'Krusty the clown' to Stephen King's 'It' ('down here, we all float'), I don't recall ever seeing clowns not related to creepiness.

That does make them awesome subjects for horror story writers and mischievous kindergarten-wall painters though...
