21 Years

Marci and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary this weekend, with a trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York. We rented an apartment overlooking Keuka Lake for two nights. And during the days, we spent our time together walking quiet trails and roads, eating interesting food, and lounging around the apartment — just resting and enjoying each other’s company. It was lovely.

“Ithaca is gorges.” We saw it on brochures, hats, and T-shirts. So we decided we had to see it for ourselves. And while the town of Ithaca itself was not all that amazing, the natural areas surrounding the town and nearby Cayuga Lake were pretty spectacular. Our favorite spot was Taughannock Falls; we were surprised by how much we felt like we had the place to ourselves.

Even more than the hiking, or the restaurants, or the relaxation, though, we really just enjoyed the chance to reflect together on 21 years of marriage. Our relationship hasn’t been (and still is not) perfect. We’ve aged considerably since our wedding day. But we’re still figuring things out together. And I think that’s kind of gorgeous.
